INTERMEDIATE CARE UNIT

Extra Care and Monitoring for Those Who Need it Most

The Intermediate Care Unit (UCIM) accommodates all those patients whose situation does not permit their initial stay on the hospitalisation floor with sufficient guarantees. It is coordinated by the Anaesthetics and Recovery Service and has an anaesthetist on physical duty 24 hours a day and an intensive medicine specialist, who serves the Unit in the mornings (8.00 - 15.00).

The new Intermediate Care Unit (UCIM) accommodates all those patients whose situation does not permit their initial stay on the hospitalisation floor with sufficient guarantees. This includes:

  • Stable patients at risk of suffering complications that should be resolved immediately

  • Post-operative patients until they can be re-admitted to the hospitalisation floor

 How does the UCIM work?

The care responsibility of the Intermediate Care Unit is borne by the Anaesthesia and Recovery Service which is supported at all times by the hospital specialists involved in the condition suffered by the patient.  The service, which is handled by specialists who are physically present 24 hours a day, has the following healthcare professionals:

  • A physically on duty anaesthetist 24 hours a day.

  • An intensive care physician who will cover the 8.00 to 15.00 time slot.

  • Nursing staff

  • Supporting A&E services

The care team is responsible for the Unit's admissions and discharges as well as care assessment applications for the rest of the clinic’s specialist physicians, who support patients of the Intermediate Care unit as a priority. All of the services with a patient of their specialism admitted to the Unit are visited by them daily and they coordinate the necessary care with the duty anaesthetist.
